Country Cooking from a Redneck Kitchen by Francine Bryson

Country Cooking from a Redneck Kitchen by Francine BrysonFrancine Bryson is a national pie champion and a former finalist on The American Baking Competition. She’s written two cookbooks, “œBlue Ribbon Baking from a Redneck Kitchen” and her recent publication, “œCountry Cooking from a Redneck Kitchen“ which is my most recent review. As my family contemplates a move a little further South in a couple of years, I thought it would be fun to dip my toe into the Southern culinary cuisine.

I spent a sold two weeks deciding which recipe I would try for this review and landed on “œThe Best Fried Chicken You’ll Ever Eat”. My husband is eager for any excuse to use his deep fryer so this had to be the one.

(Note to cookbook publishers:  Please, please, please make your cookbooks spiral bound so they’ll lay flat!)

Bryson has a whole slew of recipes and a lot of them are fried, require large amounts of butter or bacon drippings. This is not the cookbook to go to if you’re looking to eat healthier. Her recipes clearly written with helpful notes but in spite of this, “œThe Best Fried Chicken You’ll Ever Eat” was”¦not.  It was decent but didn’t live up to its name. Most of the main dishes struck me as pedestrian and didn’t stand out for me as anything especially noteworthy which was a disappointment.  But I suspect her bread and dessert recipes are where Bryson really shines. I’ve dog-earred several of her rolls and bread recipes to bake this Fall, like Peach Bread or Lemonade Rolls.

Bottom line: I’d check out Bryson’s first cookbook, “œBlue Ribbon Baking from a Redneck Kitchen” instead.

I received a complimentary copy of Country Cooking from a Redneck Kitchen in exchange for a book review. I was not required to write a positive review.
