Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel by Audrey Niffenegger

I loved Time Traveler’s Wife. I own the paperback and the audio versions.  It might be my favorite fiction book of the last decade.

This was a very different book.  At root it is a ghost story.  I am not really a ghost story person.  But the characterization kept me interested.  There was one really good twist and that was enough to really keep this a very positive review.  Several others twists were unexpected but not quite in the same way.

I read this on my kindle.  It was the first fiction book in a long time (8 or 9 months?) that I actually paid for.  Originally when Her Fearful Symmetry came out it was almost $16 for the ebook version.  There was no way I was going to buy that one.  I would have bought the audiobook with my audible.com credits (usually 1 credit to a book and I buy 24 credits annually for about $230.)  After about a month the ebook was dropped to $5.29 and that was low enough to buy.  Still took me another 2 months to get around to reading it.  But I was glad I bought it on Kindle.  There were six words that I didn’t know, but with the built in dictionary in the Kindle I was set.

Audrey Niffenegger has a way with words that I don’t find with many authors.  She really wraps me into a story.  The only caution I have is that there are some moral/ethical issues that come up toward the end.  And while I know why they are in the story, I was just not sure there was enough motivation for the characters to really do what they did.  So this is one of those books that I really liked, but I am still shaky with the ending (somewhat like what I felt with Lovely Bones, if you have read that book.)
