Offsite Review: The Quest for the Trinity by Stephen Holmes

December 18, 2012 by Adam Shields

I have been reading books about the Trinity this past year.  I think I am going to extend this reading project another year because I am not really happy with the books I have read so far.  One of the books on my ‘to read’ list for my Trinity project is The Quest for The … Read more

Offsite Review: A Hobbit Journey by Matthew Dickerson

December 17, 2012 by Adam Shields

The full title is A Hobbit Journey: Discovering the Enchantment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Timothy Stege reviewed it last week over at Englewood Review of Books.  I have not read a lot of good reviews of the movie, so for the fans Tolkien, the plethora of new books might be the way to get your fix. … Read more

John Wilson’s Favorite Books of 2012

December 17, 2012 by Adam Shields

You may not know who John Wilson is, but he is a reader worth paying attention to.  He is the editor of Christianity Today’s Books and Culture magazine and one of the most interesting readers I know.  (I don’t actually know him, it is a figure of speech). I regularly listen to the Books and … Read more

NPR had a story yesterday about the best books as chosen by some of the better known Indie Bookstores.  It is another list of books where not only have I not read any of the books, but I don’t think I have even heard of any of the books.  But there are good descriptions, so … Read more

Offsite Review: The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson

December 13, 2012 by Adam Shields

I have been facinated by Emily Dickinson since I had a class with Roger Lundin in college.  That was several years before he published a biography of Dickinson and I have always meant to get around to reading it and never have.  (I have so many good intentions.) Englewood Review of Books has a review … Read more

Offsite Review: The Weight of Mercy: A Novice Pastor on the Streets

December 12, 2012 by Adam Shields

One of the things I have grown to learn about myself is that I thought I was much better at many things than I really am.  I have a degree in social work.  I worked during grad school at a long term rehab program for primarily homeless clients.  What I learned it that I am … Read more

Offsite Review: Delighting in the Trinity

December 11, 2012 by Adam Shields

For the most part, one of the books that I have almost … Read more
