Over the last couple months, I have been reading much more fiction than I have in recent years. I am not sure if I am just burned out with non-fiction or I have may internal changes in my approach to reading or something else. But the result is that I have expanded my reach into previously unexplored areas of fiction.
While I traditionally like young adult literature, I have read virtually no Christian young adult fiction outside of a few classics. A friend of mine recommended this to me a while ago and I finally got around to reading over the weekend.
Like usual I had not even read the description before I started reading. I knew it was an adventure book targeted toward children ages 9-12. I did not realize that it was a fantasy retelling of the early years of the biblical King David, but the emphasis is on fantasy, not biblical recitation.
The writing is good and I think elementary children will enjoy the humor and action and relate the the main character’s desire to do more and be grown up. Their parents will probably like that the books is clean, has biblical values and is actually an enjoyable read (many of the reviews are from adults that read it to their children out loud.)
The only negative is that because it is a retelling of David, the plot line is fairly predictable. But I enjoyed it as a quick read and I will read the next two in the series.
