The Opal Deception (Artemis Fowl: Book 4) by Eoin Colfer

The Opal Deception (Artemis Fowl, Book Four)Summary: Artemis is once again dragged into the Fairy world to help save it from destruction.

At the end of the last book, Artemis and all of his human associates were mind-wiped.  Their memories of the Fairy world and the previous two years were gone.  The fear was that Artemis would revert back to his old criminal ways (since he did not have the two years of Fairy influence and his own experience).

At the beginning of the book, he has reverted to his old ways.  But subconsciously crime did not have the luster that it used to have.  After narrowly escaping death a couple of times, being saved by both Butler, Captain Short and then Diggums, he finally fully recovers his memories and has to stop Opal Koboi from exacting her revenge and revealing the world of the Fairies to all of humanity at the same time.

The restart of the series that was hinted at at the end of the last book was fully on display in this book.  Artemis is no longer boy-genius/criminal-mastermind, he is now boy-genius/working for good.  It is sort of the idea of the TV series Leverage, take a bunch of super criminals and use them to stop the actual bad guys.

At the same time, Artemis is revealed to be much more human than previous books.  He now wants a relationship with his family.  Money is no longer the most important way of keeping score.

A nice turn of the series.  I am looking forward to book 5.
